Hope Through The Years

Founded in 2009, Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission began as a small ministry run out of San Pablo Lutheran Church in Sun Valley where volunteers cooked and served hot meals to homeless men, women and children.
In 2010 Moved to a 26,000 sq. ft facility in Sun Valley and began providing showers, life-skills classes and case management. In 2011 Opened John E. White House of Hope recovery program for men in Arleta. In 2012 Opened Genesis House, a 30-bed facility in Pacoima for homeless families. Opened our first social enterprise Thrift Store in Granada Hills. In 2013 Opened the BRIDGE, a 17-bed transitional housing facility for men in Canoga Park.
In 2014 Took over operation of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s Cold Weather Shelters in Pacoima and Sylmar with a total of 290 beds. Opened our second social enterprise Thrift Store in Santa Clarita. In 2015 Relocated our homeless services to Van Nuys, expanded services and named the program the HELP Center In 2016 Opened our third thrift store in Simi Valley.
In 2018 Converted the BRIDGE program to a 38-bed shelter for youth ages 18-24 in Burbank called The Landing. Opened Shepherd’s House, a 48-bed crisis housing program in the West San Fernando Valley for homeless families with children. Opened (2) 50-Bed Cold Weather Shelters in Antelope Valley.

Opened a Safe Parking shelter in Palmdale for 30 cars Launched a weekly Motel Meal Program to address hunger issues of the more than 400 homeless families living in motels in the Valley. Opened our fourth thrift store in Palmdale. In 2020 Pandemic shelters as part of the Covid response 6 sites plus two trailer sites. Raymer shelter. Navigation center. Van Nuys Shelter.
In 2021 Opened our fifth social enterprise Thrift Store in Lancaster. February, Chandler Tiny Homes opened. April, Alexandria Tiny Homes opened. May, Reseda Tiny Homes opened. August, Tarzana Tiny Homes opened. September, Whitsett West Tiny Homes opened. November, Arroyo Seco Tiny Homes opened. In 2022 Opened the 107-bed facility the Trebek Center.

In 2023 Opened a 43-unit, 100-bed facility for families experiencing homelessness – The Alvarado Opened a 100-unit, 400-bed facility for families experiencing homelessness – The Woodlands Opened a Veterans Tiny Home Village. Opened 3 Inside Safe shelters with over 200 beds. Opened the 170-bed Wellness Center in Victorville. Opened our Brand New Commercial Kitchen in North Hills. Awarded 6 additional HomeKey Motels. Went regional expanding services to San Bernardino County.

Hope Through The Years

2009

Ken Craft

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Ken Craft is the founder and current Chief Executive Officer of Hope the Mission. Since 2009, when Ken served Hope’s first meal to the homeless of the San Fernando Valley, Ken has been a visionary leader. His compassion for those living in poverty has led Hope’s regional expansion beyond the San Fernando Valley to San Bernardino, Victorville, Bakersfield, and beyond. Under his leadership, the organization has become a leading provider of housing and homeless services in the state of California. Ken is considered one of the leading practitioners in homeless services and is a highly sought-after speaker in faith communities and conferences on issues of housing and poverty. “The streets cannot be the waiting room for permanent housing” – Ken Craft

Rowan Vansleve

President

Rowan currently serves as the President of Hope the Mission, he first worked for Hope in 2010. He leads the day-to-day operations of the Mission and its long-term strategic vision. He is responsible for the Mission’s financial stability, personnel, communications, fundraising, media engagement, and community awareness. During his time at Hope, he has filled several roles including Interim Chief Program Officer, Chief Development Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Rowan is considered a thought leader in homeless services and is often sought after as a speaker or for media comment.
